…not only for people but for houses too!
It’s natural for people to look their best to gain a positive first impression. You might have heard of “Dress to impress!” Whether you’re preparing for a job interview, courting someone, or just simply walking around window shopping, people’s first impression of you is usually based on how you dress up and carry yourself. Did you know that the same goes for houses too?
How your house look from the street, how maintained your lawn or outdoor garden is, and the quality of your exterior house finishes are some of the things that can create a lasting impression, even before a visitor steps inside your house.
These things affect the attractiveness of a house from the outside or what we call curb appeal.
Most people get concerned with curb appeal only when they plan on selling their house since it improves the perceived value of the whole property. But if you just moved into your new house and want friends or relatives to be ‘wowed’ when they come over, you might want to consider improving your curb appeal. Below are a few areas to look into.
Landscaping
Your front yard is the first thing people see. Start with the grass. Remove and fix any burnt or withered patches as they make your property old. Frequently water it until you see an improvement. Then, check on overgrown and dying bushes especially near your front door. Make sure to trim them. Try planting flower-bearing trees like champak to add more color to your landscape.
Roof of the house
Maintaining the roof is sometimes the last thing homeowners consider. Although people don’t see your house from the top, a well-maintained roof is very recognizable from afar. In the Philippines, we have the rainy and dry season all throughout the year, with extreme conditions as typhoons and el niño. The change in weather greatly affects the condition of the roof. Look into any signs of dilapidation and replace them right away.

House exterior
This includes the siding of the house (e.g. brick, glass, metal, vinyl, etc.), paint finishes, louvers, windows, gutters, etc. A dirty exterior does not create a good impression. Do a regular clean up, maybe once a month, to maintain the quality and look of your exterior.
Carport or driveway
Weeds growing out on your driveway is not a good sight. Remove or fix them. Also, take out right away any dirt or mud from the car wheels as it destroys the cleanliness of the carport.
Front door
Your visitors will likely notice your front door as they step inside your house. Aside from a well-decorated front door, a well-maintained one will surely impress too. Check on any cracks, peeling paint, wood discoloration, or loose knobs and hinges. Fix them right away. If fixing won’t do any good, try getting a new door.
Lighting
If your house is impressive in daytime, it should be as impressive at night. A well-planned exterior lighting layout might be costly but it surely does the wonder. Highlight important landscaping elements and add decorative lamps by the front door. A very attractive lighting just makes your house stand out from the rest.
So, if you took down notes and applied these, your house will surely be as good as the impression it gets. Make sure your interior does the work too. Then, you’ll only have to worry about what to serve the next time as visitors will surely love to keep coming back.
