February 14 is St. Valentine’s Day, as declared by Pope Gelasius I. Historically, it was not until 1381 when this Christian feast day was associated with love. Chaucer composed a poem in honor of the engagement between England’s Richard II and Anne of Bohemia and titled it Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine. From then on, the holiday evolved and by the 18th century, gift-giving and exchanging hand-made cards have become common in England.
Here in the Philippines, it is typical for a Filipino to spend Valentine’s day with their partner. In social media, memes about moving on and letting go are popular in this season; targeted to those who have no partners to spend the holiday with. Nevertheless, we Filipinos often disregard the fact that we can actually spend it with our Families.
Here are some activities you can do with your family:
1. Watch movies
Who doesn’t love to watch movies? Whether you like romance, animated, action or suspense films, a movie marathon would always go well with a bag of popcorn or anything you would want to munch on.
2. Bring everyone to the kitchen
Most kids would love to imitate what their parents are doing. While some are hesitant for their kids to hold a knife or any sharp object, it is a good idea to let them handle even the simplest task when cooking. Kids would appreciate the trust and the type of responsibility you give them. If you are afraid your kids might get their hands burnt in the oven, there are a number of no-bake desserts you can make and even healthy snacks that only require mixing.
Surely, the family that eats together stays together. Nevertheless, your family would appreciate the food more if they get the chance to prepare it themselves.
3. Spend time outdoors
It’s a good idea to breathe and unwind every once in a while. Shutting off social media occasionally is good for you. Studies have shown that social media have negative impacts towards us, specifically lowering our self-esteem and discouraging real-life conversations.
On V-day, having outdoor activities with the family such as biking, hiking, or simply playing Pinoy games in your backyard certainly is fun. These are not just fun activities, but also good forms of exercise. Also, you can spice up your hiking by doing it during nighttime, when the stars are out and even have camping afterwards. Nothing beats a moment when you are all star gazing with a warm cup of hot chocolate while there is a bonfire.
4. Go artsy with handicrafts
If you love to do artsy stuff during your free time, this can be a good Valentine’s day activity for your family. Lisa Horten of Pop Sugar says that it is a good idea for the family to create a tree of loved ones, where you can write messages to your relatives in each tree branch.
Aside from this innovative family tree concept, there are other handicraft ideas which you can also sell.
Anything that makes you feel relaxed, soothed and rejuvenated is a good family activity. Doing something you love is a good thing to do on the day of love and hearts, isn’t it?
